"The Destroyer of Worlds"

Writer's picture: RichardRichard

When the father of the nuclear bomb, J. Robert Oppenheimer, observed the first detonation test (code name TRINITY) as part of the Manhattan project, he reflected on passages from the Hindu sacred text Bhagavad-Gita. The following is a chilling account (53 sec):

“Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

I submit to you, dear reader, that the damage and suffering we inflict upon each other, animals and the biosphere each and every year is greater than even the tragic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

All of us, to a greater or lesser degree, accept much of it because it's common; because we've forgotten there's another way; because altering the status quo seems an insurmountable undertaking.

It's not the bright light of a weapon that blinds us, it's deadly apathy, greed & deficit of compassion.

Have we become Death, the destroyer of worlds?
